Flowers blooming, the occasional warm breeze, and abundant blue skies are making us all want to get out and enjoy life, as well we should. Events are still less frequent than the norm for this time of year, but there are abundant opportunities for safe, fun experiences. The first item on our 12 things to do in Michigan in April 2021 may not be as much fun as the other 11, but it sure makes them more possible.
April 1-30 Get a COVID Shot – Various
By far, the coolest thing to do this month, if you haven’t done so already, is to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Our numbers across the state are rising at an alarming rate, so it’s incredibly important that we all do our part to end the pandemic. The state has opened up vaccinations to all those age 16 and over. There is no cost. The more people who get vaccinated, the faster we can revitalize our economy, and better yet, see a return of things we love, like getting together with family and friends, and enjoying summer events. April 6-30 Ride the Classics – Hickory Corners
If you love cars, then there’s never a bad month to visit the Gilmore Car Museum, but April is particularly delightful with its Ride the Classics event. Weather permitting, guests are invited to take a spin in a vintage car right out of the museum’s collection. Rides are offered every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday throughout the month from 11am to 3pm.
April 9-18 Detroit Black Restaurant Week – Detroit
For the fourth time, Black-owned restaurants in Detroit are teaming up for a celebration of their culinary excellence, and it’s a great time for all of us to support our favorites and/or discover some new dining destinations. This year’s event features over thirty eateries including Blackcloud Kitchen, Delphine’s Jamaican, Floods, Ivy Kitchen & Cocktails, Le Crepe, Sugah Please, and Yoshi Hibachi Grill, to name just a few.
April 10 East Side Beer Tour – Grand Rapids
Join the expert ale aficionados at Grand Rapids Beer Tours for a trip to some of the city’s lesser known, yet equally delightful beer destinations. Your $65 ticket includes safe, socially-distanced transportation, brewery tours, and 12 beer samples. You’ll visit the charming Brewery Vivant, which is housed in an old chapel, as well as Arvon Brewing and Brass Ring. If this date doesn’t fit your schedule or you want to visit some additional destinations, there are several other tours available.
April 10-11 Spring Artisan Market – Three Oaks
The only way to top a shopping experience that allows you to find truly unique, locally-produced items is to offer it in a particularly unique setting. Mission accomplished. This shoppers’ delight takes place in the old Featherbone Corset Factory, now known as Journeyman Distillery. That means you can wander around exploring locally-sourced gourmet and personal care items and handcrafted decor and jewelry, while sipping on your favorite craft cocktail. Admission is free. The market is open from 10:30am-7:00pm on Saturday the 10th and 10:00am-5:00pm on Sunday the 11th.
April 17 Greenfield Village Opening Day – Dearborn
There are few places in our state that provide as much historical context in as much of a magical setting as Greenfield Village. Enjoy the spring blooms and the rhythmic clomping of horse hooves alongside the hum of a Model T, as you stroll through yesteryear. The new season opens on April 17 and that amazing frozen custard awaits!
April 17 MSU Global Day of Service – Various
Every year in April Michigan State University people to participate in its Global Day of Service. Once again, some project adjustments have been made due to the pandemic. Safety is the top priority. However, there is so much need in the world right now, that this is an important day. Notably, you don’t have to be a Spartan to join in. Visit the website for a list of opportunities. Doing some good for others will definitely do some good for you too.
April 17-24 Detroit River Coalition’s Earth Week – Detroit
Join the Detroit River Coalition to celebrate of Earth Day. Participate in cleanup events happening along the Detroit River from April 17-24. You can join in on an organized group cleanup. Conversely, simply gather family and friends and tackle an area on your own. Take a photo of your accomplishments. Then enter it into a contest for a chance to win a Detroit Arrow Bicycle from Shinola.
April 21 Shepler’s Ferries Launch to Mackinac – St Ignace
With boats returning to our beloved Mackinac Island, you know summer can’t really be that far away. Case in point, Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry’s 2021 season is slated to begin at 7:30am on Wednesday, April 21 from St. Ignace. Then broaden to include voyages from Mackinaw City on April 26. Excitingly, the Michigan-built William Richard will be available for its first full season of rides this year. Shepler’s has also added more of its popular lighthouse cruises, including some new sites.
April 23-25 Opera Captured on Film – Virtual
The arts have taken a particularly big hit as of late. Fortunately, many groups are working together and getting creative. For example, the Freep Film Festival and Opera MODO are collaborating to bring us great entertainment, coupled with and support rising artists. Opera MODO is a Detroit-based company. It’s known for intriguing, modern performances that showcase new talent in unique settings. This event will showcase previously recorded performances of Carmen and A Capacity for Evil. In addition, there will be short live performances and a Q&A. Tickets start at $12 per performance and proceeds help sustain MODO and support its artists.
April 23-25 35th Annual Walleye Festival – Freeland
Head toward the Great Lakes Bay Region for this celebration of one of the best catches our state has to offer. That is, of course, Walleye. Naturally, the focal point of the celebration is a fishing tournament, but you can also just hang out to indulge in the fish fry. Alternatively, check out the car show, casino, corn hole or poker tournaments. Want to get some exercise? Join in on the 5K/10K races or disc golf. If you feel more like shopping then there’s a rummage sale. Look forward to a safe and fun fest for the whole family.
April 23-25 Sprinterfest – New Baltimore
The fine folks in New Baltimore have adjusted to keep this important fundraiser going in 2021. Although it’s typically a winterfest, this version is sure to be a good time. There are games and activities for children. You can also enjoy live entertainment, food, and beverages for a good cause. Proceeds will help fund a new playscape at Ruedisale Park. Â there is truly something for everyone.
