Spiked seltzer is now a rapidly growing industry, and Michigan companies are serving up some unique additions to the segment this year. This relatively new addition to the beverage scene really took off in 2019 when sales of hard seltzer surpassed $1 billion for the first time, which was an increase of nearly 200% compared to the previous year. Since then, the crisp refreshers have been taking up more and more space on store shelves, especially in the summer.

The enormous variety of flavors may be one reason for the popularity, and their impact may be another. The alcohol by volume is typically around 5%, which is on the low end of the spectrum, with on average only about 100 calories per can. This makes them a nice choice for a long day one the boat or basking in the sun.

Atwater
The fruity flavor isn’t the only thing that stands out about Atwater’s entry into the market, it’s also the packaging. Its seltzers are sold in a 12-pack of Mango, Lime, and Cherry, and labeled as “spiked sparkling water.” The cans are tall and slender, perhaps a nod to the fact that these are a lower calorie alternative to most alcoholic beverages. You don’t find a lot of cherry on the market from other makers, but of course, it’s the perfect option for a Michigan company.

Founders
The famous Grand Rapids-based brewer enters the market with its Mas Agave line, featuring Strawberry, Lime, and Grapefruit. It calls to mind margaritas and palomas, two of the staple beverages of warm climates. Each is made with blue agave nectar, natural cane sugar, real fruit juice and a dash of sea salt. The three flavors are combined in a 15-count variety pack, or you can also find Strawberry and Lime in 6-packs on their own. Lime is even available on draft if you plan to pop into Founders this summer, and why wouldn’t you?

Short’s
It should come as no surprise that a maker based in Elk Rapids would name its seltzer variety pack Beaches, but what may be a surprise is that this year’s 12-pack consists of entirely different flavors. Last year the Beaches collection included Margarita, Mojito, Paloma, and Pina Colada cans. This year’s collection is also inspired by classic cocktails, but includes these brand new flavors: Cosmo, Moscow Mule, Tequila Sunrise, and Tom Collins.

With a nice long summer ahead, there’s time to try them all. Let a Michigan spiked seltzer, quash the summer swelter.
