Grand Rapids resident Gerald R. Ford became President of the United States on this day in 1974. His predecessor, Richard Nixon, had resigned to avoid being impeached for his role in the Watergate scandal. After taking the oath of office, President Ford spoke to the nation in a television address, famously proclaiming, “My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over.”
