The Griffon sails past future Detroit site in 1679
August 10, 2021 @ 12:00 am
The Griffon became the first sailing vessel to pass what will one day be Detroit on its way to the upper Great Lakes on this day in 1679. Built by Robert La Salle, who was looking for a route to Asia. The ship entered Lake St. Clair two days later, on the feast day of Saint Clare of Assisi, and named the lake after her.
