On this day in 1959, the Tommy Dorsey big band played to 50,000 people as they celebrated the opening of the country’s first downtown pedestrian mall in Kalamazoo. The city spent $60,000 and closed several downtown blocks to traffic in order to create the pedestrian-friendly shopping area, and reviatlize the downtown.
