An area with massive coastal sand dunes on the Lake Michigan shore was officially established as Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on this day in 1970. The park covers a 35-mile-long stretch of Lake Michigan’s eastern coastline, as well as North and South Manitou islands.
