Coleman Young becomes Detroit’s first Black mayor

Coleman Young took office as Detroit’s first Black mayor on this day in 1974. A polarizing figure, he is the only mayor to serve five consecutive terms in Detroit. During his tenure, Detroit saw the creation of several elements that are part of the city today including the Renaissance Center, Hart Plaza, and the People Mover.
