Emancipation Proclamation read publicly in Detroit for the first time

The Emancipation Proclamation was read for the first time in Michigan at the Second Baptist Church in Detroit on this day in 1863. The Second Baptist congregation is believed to have helped many of the five thousand or so slaves who crossed the Detroit River to freedom in Canada through the Underground Railroad.
