On this day in 1948, WDTR-FM, Michigan’s first educational FM radio station went on the air. Detroit Public Schools owned and operated the station from then until 2004, when the decision was made to lease it commercially for budgetary purposes. Reports estimate that it was costing the district nearly $1 Million annually to operate the station.
