January 19, 2022 @ 12:00 am
Frederick Baraga, the first bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette, originally sited at Saulte Ste. Marie, died on this day in 1868. He had served in the Upper Peninsula for 30 years, and earned the nickname the Snowshoe Priest because he would travel hundreds of miles each year on snowshoes during the harsh winters. The village of Baraga, Baraga Township, Baraga County, and Baraga State Park were all named in his honor.
