The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $7 million contract to J.F Ryba Marine Construction Co. of Cheboygan to replace old WWII-era tainter valves at the Soo Locks. Tainter valves are used to control the flow of water used for raising and lowering the water level in the lock during a lockage.
