Almost forty years ago, in an effort to inspire future generations of female leaders, the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame was established. The initial group of inductees included such noteworthy subjects as Elizabeth Chandler, Martha Griffiths, Helen Milliken, Rosa Parks, Anna Howard Shaw, and Sojourner Truth. Each year since, a group of women are nominated by an admiring public to be considered for induction, and the nomination process is now open.

If you know, or know of, a woman worthy of consideration, the selection committee would like to hear from you. Perhaps it’s your own mother or aunt, a mentor, or a woman you’ve never met, but whose accomplishments and example have been inspirational to many.

These are the basic criteria to consider:

  • Nominees have to be born in Michigan, achieved prominence within the state, or been a resident of the state for an extended period.
  • Nominees must have a distinctive accomplishment (professional or personal) and have made an impact on progress for women and girls.
  • Nominees should have qualities of character that would serve as a positive influence on the youth of Michigan.
  • The candidate may either be living or deceased.

Questions about the nomination process may be directed via email to Meaghan Bergman, the Museum Director via mbergman@miwf.org.

The nomination process is open until the end of March, 2021. The women selected will be honored at the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in the fall. After the women are officially inducted, their stories remain on the Hall of Fame timeline and website here and their stories will continue to be told in an exhibit at the museum in downtown Lansing.

Last year’s inductees were entrepreneur Dorothy Zehnder, journalist Martha Teichner, humanitarian Najah Bazzy, educator Glenda Price, activist Elizabeth Jackson, and pioneering NASA programmer Atlas Ruth Westbrook.
