A new business tenant is set to howl in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood. Coyote Logistics, a Chicago-based transportation management services company, intends to establish a new tech hub at 1700 Fort Street.
The third-party logistics provider was co-founded by Jeff and Marianne Silver in 2006 with a goal to create a better service experience in the transportation industry. In 2015 it became a United Parcel Service (UPS) company, adding, among other things, UPS asset utilization and air and ocean freight to its portfolio of services.
Coyote’s move into Detroit is slated for the 3rd quarter of 2019. When completed, the tech hub is expected to be home to 500 jobs, at least 350 of which will be newly-created positions. The company has presence in Ann Arbor, but has reportedly outgrown the space.
“Detroit’s growing reputation as the Midwest’s hub for technology and innovation was a huge draw as we looked to expand Coyote’s operations,” said John Perkovich, Vice President at Coyote, in a news release. “As we continue to raise the bar in the logistics industry, we are proud to be doing so alongside so many other companies in Detroit who are leaders in their industries.”
Coyote will be the anchor tenant in The Assembly, a property owned and managed by Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock Detroit. The property was previously owned by Detroit-based The Display Group, which moved into the Packard Plant in May 2015.
According to Bedrock, Coyote will occupy about 58,000 of the 160,000-square-foot property. It will be in office space on the second and third floors. The first floor of the soon-to-be rehabbed facility will offer retail and restaurant options, while the top is dedicated to housing with 32 unique apartments.
The Assembly is located on the north side of West Fort Street between Rosa Parks Boulevard and 10th Street. The project, which is only about a mile from Ford’s new mobility campus, in and around Michigan Central Station, represents a significant investment in the continuing redevelopment of Detroit’s oldest neighborhood.
