On this day in 1930, the nearly mile-long Detroit-Windsor Tunnel opened to traffic beneath the Detroit River. The first passenger car through the tunnel, which opend a year ahead of schedule, was a 1929 Studebaker. To this day it is the only underwater tunnel for vehicles in the world, that connects two nations.
