On this day in 1932 Ford first began production of its revolutionary V-8. The powerful engine was the first of its kind to be designed for an affordable, mass-marketed car. The secretive design process took place in a lab that was once part of Thomas Edison’s estate in Florida. Henry Ford had the building moved to Dearborn’s Greenfield Village in 1928. Inside, a team of engineers worked tirelessly for years in an effort to eclipse Chevy’s V-6 engine. Eventually they came up with V-8 engine cast as a single block mold, something that had never been accomplished before. Ford’s V-8 was affordable and able to reach speeds of up to 75 MPH, making it a huge success for decades to come.
