In an operation at Detroit’s Mount Sinai Hospital, Haskell Shanks of Warren, Michigan became the first American to receive a mechanical heart pump on this day in 1971. The surgery, which took about five hours, was performed by a team headed by Dr. Adrian Kantrowitz, developer of the artificial pacemaker.
