Chesapeake & Ohio launched its car ferry, called Spartan, on this day in 1952. Shortly after, its sister ship Badger launched. The last coal-fired passenger-carrying steamships built in the United States, each made roundtrip voyages from Ludington to ports in Wisconsin, and were named after the mascots of Michigan State and University of Wisconsin, respectively.
